NEW PRODUCT! THE BINDER LIFT!

The Binder Lift is an emergency patient lifting device designed specifically for the Paramedic and Fire Departments.

One does not have to go to any great distance to discover a person within the Emergency Service Departments with a back problem. Unfortunately close to 50% of paramedics, firefighters and emergency personel are taken out of work temporarily at least once in their work life due to lifting a patient with the same lifting techniques deemed as ’safe'. Around 25% of those emergency services personel never return to their job. It’s a tragic statistic but the solution has finally arrived to put an end to the uncertainty in your work.

The Binder Lift is that very solution many have been waiting for. This patient lifting device is the first of it’s kind, ingeniously built to last in the untrustworthy manufacturing era of today.

Dan Binder is the inventor, but without his wife Julie, he may of never provided such an answer to an overlooked problem. Julie was working as a paramedic at the time the idea came to Dan. It was 2012, New Year’s Day. Julie had to personally lift up an enormous number of drunk patients of all shapes and sizes and load them into her ambulance. Frustrated, she later informs Dan of the issue, which then inspired the idea that was a long time coming for Emergency Services around the world.

The Binder Lift allows those who are lifting a patient the opportunity to safely do so. Not only is it safer for you, but the patient too. Made from Corder Denier 1000 Nylon, with 2" Polypropylene Web Strapping. There are 19-25 handles (depending on size) in a 360 degree fashion, making the job immeasurably easier. Even the patient’s are satisfied with Cushioned Top Edge and Torso Wrap Design that reduces bruising and skin tears, while providing them with the security and stabilisation they’ve never had before. Even when things get messy, it provides a barrier between yourself and the patient, along with protecting your equipment from contamination.

The 2 years following its release, the Binder Lift received awards by JEMS as the Hot Product of the Year, not once, but twice.

It really is ‘The Safer Way to Lift, Because Humans Don’t Come with Handles.’

Binder Lift is available in 3 models, Original, Plus and Ultra

Night Stick Torches and Headlamps for Hazardous and Explosive Classified zoned Environments

Night Stick Torches and Headlamps for Hazardous and Explosive Classified zoned Environments

Using flashlights in explosive and hazardous environments, can have fatal consequences if users do not understand the specific zoning requirement of their workplace and ensure their selection is certified to recognised standard and gas class classification. People who do not know better, like to use the word “intrinsically safe” Nothing should be assumed “intrinsically safe” unless it is tested certified and marked for use used in a specific environment.

Zone classifications are classed according to risk.

In Australia, IEC Ex and the ATEX directive are the only recognised standards for explosive and hazardous environments that determine or reference where intrinsically approved torches or devices should only be used.

Always make sure that the flashlight is clearly marked with the approved classification. If your flashlight is not marked as such it is highly likely that it is not approved for use in an explosive or hazardous environment.

The markings indicate specific zone ratings, temperature and gas classes that the device is approved to use in a high risk classified zoned area.

Nightstick manufacture specific IEC and ATEC certified flashlights and headlamp models rated and approved for use in explosive and hazardous environments.

BRT Fire and Rescue Supplies is the importer, distributor and stockist for Nightstick IEC ex and ATEX intrinsically safe certified flashlights in Australia.

What fire fighters should know about fighting bush fires with foam

What is meant by the word foam? Foam is actually hollow spheres of water or bubbles. When water is mixed with air, a foam results, however, it is not stable and collapses quickly. By using Solberg Fire-BrakeTM 3150A Class A Foam Concentrate, it is possible to stabilise bubbles. A foam concentrate will reduce the surface tensions of the water, allowing the bubbles to form more readily. A good foaming agent, such as Solberg Fire-BrakeTM 3150A Class A Foam Concentrate will produce small uniform bubbles. This kind of foam is much more stable than the larger bubbles produced by dish soap type foam concentrates. The small uniform bubbles make a more rigid foam which has a better resistance to heat from a fire, or even the sun. The end result is a foam that will last longer.

By taking a closer look we are able to make some basic calculations on the composition of foam. We know that when a foam is produced, it results in
8 to 12 times the original volume of water (i.e. one litre of water turns into 8 to 12 litres of foam). If we assume an average expansion of ten (half way between 8 and 12) and the foam concentrate is used at a level of 1%, we can state that the foam consists of 90% air, 9.9% water and 0.1% foam concentrate.

How foam works: it can act like a blanket, excluding oxygen and smothering the fire, therefore, disrupting the fire triangle (fuel, heat, oxygen). These characteristics make foam useful for both Class A fuels (common in bushlands) and Class B fuels (associated with forestry equipment).

WHY USE FOAM FOR BUSH FIRES?

1. Foam expands your water

2. It clings to fuels

3. Foam acts like a thermal barrier

4. A blanket of foam can smother a fire

5. Foams hold water

6. Foam slowly releases water

7. Released water has good wetting characteristics

8. Foam is white and easily seen

9. It can be used for ground and aerial tankers

10. Foam is environmentally safe

Foam also has a cooling effect on the fire. It absorbs heat in two ways - as an insulating material and through the evaporation of water.

How can foam act as an insulating material? As we stated earlier, a foam is 90% air bubbles. This is similar to an insulating foam, therefore, it is capable of absorbing heat from an on-coming fire, keeping the fuel cooler.

Foam can also cool the fire through evaporation. As the foam collapses, water is released. The temperature of the water will rise (absorbing heat) and eventually turn into steam. This is the normal theory for using water on a fire: cooling the fire by removing its energy.

The foam releases its water in two ways. The first method is through heat. When the air in the bubbles heats up it expands, breaking the bubble and releasing its water. The second method of releasing water is due to the effect of gravity. As the foam sits, the bubble wall will no longer be of equal thickness. The water will tend to favour the bottom of the bubble because of gravity. Eventually the bubble will become unstable, releasing its water.

The water released by the foam contains a wetting agent which allows it to penetrate deeper than normal water. By penetrating the fuel deeper, it can increase the water content quickly, therefore, reducing its ability to burn. The "wet water" characteristic is also highly desirable for peat and dense fuel fires.

Since the foam is slowly releasing its water, it is acting like a water reservoir. This, along with the foam's ability to cling to trees, allows the user to control the water. The foam will stick where you put it, while water will run off and form puddles.

When you think of foam, the first image which comes to mind is something that is white, light and fluffy. How could anything of this description be dropped from an aircraft and penetrate the tree canopy? Well, quite simply, it does. When dropped from normal operational heights, the foam is capable of coating the trees and reaching the ground. Relatively speaking, more foam stays in the canopy than would normal water, however, the foam is not trapped in the canopy. The foam will still slowly drain, releasing water. This water will "rain" down from the canopy and increase the relative humidity of the immediate area. The moisture in the air will absorb heat and evaporate, cooling the fire. By increasing the moisture in both the air and the fuel, it is possible to reduce the rate of spread of fire. The deep penetration of the "wet water" from the foam can keep the fuel wet enough to potentially prevent the fire from further advancing.

An interesting advantage to the foam is its colour. The white foam is highly visible to the pilots. Since the foam is easy to see, it will greatly assist the water bombing operations to construct a continuous fire break. As a result, there will be less chance of "weak points" in the fire breaks.

Solberg Fire-BrakeTM 3150A Class A Foam Concentrate can also be an effective agent when used by ground crews. Foam that is applied through hoses has all the same properties as that of aircraft application.

When using foam in bushfire tankers, it is not necessary to have any special equipment. A foam branch produces good foam but it limits your throw, use your standard nozzle to maximise reach of stream. Most foaming will occur when the water stream hits the ground or fuels.

To gain the advantage of foam you only need to put the foam concentrate into your water tank, alternatively, low cost around-the-pump proportioners are now available to introduce the foam concentrate to the water stream, which reduces wasting the concentrate.

A final, yet important, benefit of Solberg Fire-BrakeTM 3150A Class A Foam Concentrate is its safety. A lot of time and effort has been placed in developing a foam concentrate which would be safe for man and environment. A great deal of attention has been given to the effects of aquatic life. Environmental and safety information can be acquired from Solberg Asia Pacific Pty Ltd.

It is possible for lead to be cut across the active and neutral wires and totally miss the earth. The earth wire is critical to ground a fault and activate a safety switch. What makes a braided power lead different is the addition of a tinned copper braid encasing the cable which is intergrated to the earth wire.

What are the advantages of using braided extension leads?

- Braid sheath permanently connected to the earth wire.

- Ensures safety devices activates when lead is damages.

- Braid offers higher mechanical protection.

Best Planning with Incident Command Management

The majority of emergency incidents require combined interaction between multiple agency groups such as Fire and Rescue, Ambulance, Police and Mines Rescue. These emergency events may also involve loca, state and federal government agencies.

Incident Command Management at any level should have the ability to capture all critical event information including all resources such as the positioning and movement of operational vehicles and personnel.

The concept of Incident Management is based upon three core fundamentals. These core fundamentals include Command, Control and Co-ordination. In a professionally managed response environment, the control would generally be undertaken by one single person who is commonly known as the "Incident Controller".

When in different circumstances the Incident Controller may be required to form a support team or task force to assist with the planning and co-ordination on the event. At all times it is extremely important that all liaison officers have sufficient training and the authority to communicate on behalf of the agency they represent.

BRT Fire and Rescue Supplies are proud to be distributors of a range of Incident Command solutions designed especially for the management of onsite incidents and emergency response operations. These products include small incident command systems such as folders, and soft bag kits, to hard case portable work station incident command systems.

How Safe is Your Generator??

Question: Does the safety switch (RCD) on your generator protect you?

Answer: No, not in all situations.

Reason: Electricity flows to earth (ground) by the least path of resistance. This is critical especially if the user is in a wet or damp environment.

A safety switch needs to be connected to a tested earth spike that has less resistance than a human body. If a generator is mounted on a vehicle it remains insulated from the earth. This scenario makes a safety switch useless. An RCD requires a tested earth spike to operate correctly.

SOLUTION:

This safety device offers protection regardless of the earthing environment by combining a standard safety switch with an Earth Sensing Device (ESD). The ESD operates in a compromised earth environment by monitoring voltage and current on the earth circuit. The DUO then isolates power in the event of an electrical fault. "Click to see the power safety product range"

FAQ - AC Hot Stick Detection Range?

The distance of the AC Hot Stick of which it can detect simply depends on how high the voltage is and how large of an area is exposed, and not covered by any shields that may be grounded. For example a "hot" 7500v overhead power line can be picked up from approximately 60 metres away, however a vehicle in contact with 12vac can be detected from approximately 2.5 metres.

The setting of the AC HotStick detection mode on the unit also will vary the detection range. AC Hot Stick uses an audible beep and visual LED which will increase in rate or decrease whether the user gets closer or further from the voltage source.

In 1962 Bill Allender began manufacturing boots in his garage at the rear of his Preston home after 40 years of gaining experience in footwear design and development. By 1972, Bill's son Russell had taken over the helm and was producing a small range of safety boots to the Australian Standard AS/NZ 2210-2 along with ankle boots for industry and the Department of Defence.

In October 1996 Highmark Shoes (Taipan) became the first company in the world to install a 'Main Group Machine' that could produce the revoltionary DDR (Dual Density Rubber) moulded soles. Highmark Shoes (Taipan) produced a range of footwear uner the TAipan label, and over the next 13 years held supply contracts with various entities including ADF, various Police, Fire and Emergency Agencies.

Russell Allender sold the company in 2006 and retired leaving Vince Bellina and Ordi Mitkoski as owners, for approx 5 years, who then ceased trading in July 2011.

Taipan Footwear was purchased and re-established by Skyrange Footwear Pty Ltd, a partnership of both dedicated and experienced Australian Manufacturing and International Footwear Manufacturing, both of whom have a long history of successful quality and manufacturing expertise. This partnership, comprising Kelvin Ryan, Lawrence Ryan, Wennywaty Halim, Marissa Salilm, took effect on February 25, 2012 and production commenced on March 5, 2012.
SOLBERG Fire Brake Foam is TYRE FIRE BREAKTHROUGH!

A Fire Control Officer for the Sutherland Shire Council, began using Solberg Fire-Brake™ 3150A (Class A) Foam Concentrate after the fire, fuelled by 30,000 tyres, had been smouldering for 15 hours. Almost immediately, a spot which had been flaring was brought under control with a 3/4” hand line and the Brigade was able to enter the site.

The NSW Bush Fire Brigade demonstrated the fire could have been controlled in less than three hours if a particular type of fire fighting foam had been used. Designed for use in bush fire control, the Solberg foam is also suitable for Class A fire situations - those involving wood, rubber and plastics.

“ The breakthrough occurred with the use of Solberg Foam - Fire Brake™ 3150A at 8.00 a.m.” said Sutherland Shire Council.

What makes BRT Fire and Rescue Supplies different to most pool and irrigation pump shops, is that we understand both the equipment and the setup for fire, flood and emergency situations. This knowledge allows us to recommend and match equipment for maximum performance and purpose. It doesn't have to be expensive, just done right the first time!

Hose, nozzles, bush fire foam, proportioners and filtration are all mission critical components when it comes to bush fire fighting and flood recovery. Get it wrong, and fighting bush fires can get very ugly fast!

FOXFURY to Illuminate University of Michigan Solar Car Team in Australian Outback

The World Solar Challenge is a demanding 1,800 mile four-day biennial race across the Australian Outback. The race starts in Darwin in the Northern Territory and travels the Stuart Highway to Port Augusta and then via Highway 1 to the finish in the City of Adelaide in South Australia. The journey can be dangerous given the Outback's extreme temperature swings and lack of communication, infrastructure, lighting and water.

Powered solely by the sun, umsolar's single-seat race vehicle uses the same amount of energy that it takes to power a hair-dryer. The Generation Solar Car is anticipated to reach a maximum speed of over 105 mph. Building the solar car is a two year project that takes over 100 student team members and more than $1 million dollars.

FoxFury has supplied umsolar with area lights and personal lights for the race. These LED headlamps, flashlights and area lights will be used to perform nightly vehicle maintenance to their Generation Solar Car and to keep team members safe.

"We expect FoxFury's lights to save us time in our evening operations in the outback, including vehicle maintenance in the pitch black of night. Nomad flood lights will be used to light our tents for vehicle maintenance. Command headlamps will allow team members to work anywhere with plenty of light," said Eric Hausman, Race Manager for umsolar.

umsolar will be competing against 40 teams. All teams are required to be self-sufficient and must set up camp at night in order to inspect and maintain their vehicles. FoxFury's lights will help increase umsolar's efficiency and enable them to quickly and safely set up camp in the dark.

"We hope our lights are one of the many tools that help lead umsolar to victory. We're happy to contribute lights that keep the team staff safe and allow them to perform needed maintenance to their incredible Generation vehicle," said Antonio Cugini, Director of Marketing for FoxFury.

If umsolar wins this race, they will be the first American Student Team to win the World Solar Challenge. Be sure to visit the umsolar website for updates before and during the race.

Taipan Footwear - Past, Present and Future

In 1962 Bill Allender began manufacturing boots in his garage at the rear of his Preston home after 40 years of gaining experience in footwear design and development. By 1972, Bill’s son Russell had taken over the helm and was producing a small range of safety boots to the Australian Standard AS/NZ 2210-2 along with ankle boots for industry and the Department of Defence. In October 1996 Highmark Shoes (Taipan ®) became the first company in the world to install a Main Group machine that could produce the revolutionary DDR® (dual density rubber) moulded soles. Highmark Shoes (Taipan ®) produced a range of footwear under the Taipan ® label, and over the next 13 years held supply contracts with various entities including the ADF, various Police, Fire and Emergency Agencies.

This partnership, comprising: Kelvin Ryan, Lawrence Ryan, Wennywaty Halim, Marissa Salim, took effect on February 25, 2012 and production commenced on March 5, 2012. First orders were received on March 7, 2012 and were quickly addressed and supplied.
