Fuel Options and Risk Ratings
Fuel Type Mix Ratio Risk Rating
Safe ULP : Diesel 1:2 Safer
ULP : Diesel 1:3
Kerosene 100% Safest
Important Notes When Using the Firebug Drip Torch

Bio-Fuel Compatibility: While the Firebug has been compatible with bio-fuels since February 2012, Rodney advise against its use due to the inconsistent nature of bio-fuel distillation processes.

Fueling Instructions:

  1. After filling the canister, ensure the fuel cap is securely replaced and tightened.
  2. Wipe away any excess fuel from the exterior of the canister, ensuring that all operating valves are closed.

Pressure Management:

  • Petrol (ULP) naturally expands with rising ambient temperatures, even within a short time frame. This expansion can increase the pressure inside the canister.
  • To relieve any built-up pressure, gently loosen the fuel cap by one turn while keeping the canister upright. Be cautious: excessive pressure inside may lead to liquid fuel leaking from the bleed screw when it is opened.

Testing the Firebug:

  1. Choose a safe, well-ventilated outdoor location, free from combustible materials.
  2. To test the torch, open the fuel tap, then turn the bleed screw a quarter of a turn.
  3. Tilt the Firebug forward so that the wand is angled between 35° and 45°, positioning the wand tip above a small amount of dry kindling or dead foliage.
  4. Allow the fuel to saturate the wick stone and drip onto the kindling.
  5. Stand the Firebug upright away from the kindling, and then light the kindling.
  6. The kindling should ignite smoothly and quietly, without sudden combustion. If it ignites abruptly, check the fuel mixture, as the petrol (ULP) proportion may be too high.
  7. Once the kindling is lit, invert the Firebug with the wick stone in the flame.
  8. Adjust the burn rate by manipulating the fuel tap until the desired fuel flow is achieved.

Important Safety Precautions:

  • Raising the wand tip above the canister will stop the fuel from flowing onto the wick stone.
  • Adjusting the wick height can help to ignite small spot fires, but never stand the Firebug fully upright while the wick is lit.

Disclaimer

The use of back burning equipment is restricted to trained and experienced personnel only. Always take appropriate precautions to ensure the safety of yourself and others. Before igniting any fire, ensure that a clear means of escape is identified, especially in areas where rapid fire spread could pose a risk. Handle all petroleum products with the same care as you would when working with fuel. Maintain the torch in optimal working condition by ensuring all connections are secure, conducting regular inspections, and replacing any damaged components exclusively with original replacement parts.
